technique
2x2 Rib
2x2 Rib alternates two knit stitches and two purl stitches for a broader elastic rib.
What it is
2x2 Rib has clearer columns than 1x1 Rib and gives an edge a stronger visual rhythm. It needs a stitch count that fits the repeat.
How Ruke patterns use it
Ruke patterns may use rib structures when an edge should feel secure but still flexible. The repeat must stay aligned around the full edge.
Pattern notation examples
- It works well on sweater hems, cuffs, hat brims and some collar edges.
- In the round, the join should preserve the repeat without a visible break.
When to use it
Use it when the design needs a visible rib with comfortable stretch.
What to check
Check stitch count multiple, column alignment after joining and whether the cast-off matches the rib elasticity.
Common mistakes
Starting with the wrong stitch, losing the repeat after decreases, or forcing 2x2 Rib onto a stitch count that does not fit.
