Cast-off with decreases
Cast-off with decreases closes an edge while reducing stitches at the same time.
What it is
Cast-off with decreases combines finishing and shaping. Instead of only passing stitches over one by one, the row can include decreases such as K2tog or K3tog while the edge is being closed.
How Ruke patterns use it
Ruke patterns may use this when an edge must close cleanly and control extra width at the same time. It is especially important where the finished edge should not flare, wave or interrupt the shape.
Pattern notation examples
- Row 1 (WS) Sl1, cast off with k2tog and k3tog as instructed, p last st.
- Row 1 (RS) Sl1, work cast-off with decreases across the edge, p last st.
When to use it
Use it when a Ruke pattern gives a cast-off instruction that also names decreases.
What to check
Check whether the instruction is worked from RS or WS, how many stitches are decreased, and whether the edge still has enough elasticity.
Common mistakes
Working a normal cast-off instead of the decrease version, or making the edge too tight while trying to control the shape.
