Cast-off with K3tog
Cast-off with K3tog finishes an edge while decreasing three stitches into one.
What it is
Cast-off with K3tog is a finishing instruction where groups of three stitches are knitted together during the cast-off. It closes the edge and removes extra stitches at the same time.
How Ruke patterns use it
Ruke patterns use this kind of finish when a regular cast-off would leave too much width or when the edge needs a controlled, gathered or shaped finish. It belongs to finishing, but it depends on understanding K3tog.
Pattern notation examples
- Row 1 (RS) Sl1, cast off with k3tog across the edge, p last st.
- Round 1 Cast off with k3tog as shown, keeping the edge elastic.
When to use it
Use it only when the pattern specifically asks to cast off with K3tog or shows that the cast-off and K3tog happen together.
What to check
Check stitch grouping, edge tension and whether the top stitch direction is specified.
Common mistakes
Casting off normally first, then trying to decrease later, or tightening every K3tog so much that the edge cannot stretch.
