Difficulty intermediate Skill cast-on 1 min read

What it is

Provisional Cast-on keeps the starting edge live so its stitches can be worked later.

How Ruke patterns use it

Ruke Knowledge uses this page for constructions that need a temporary beginning, a folded edge or knitting in two directions. The waste yarn must remain removable without damaging the live stitches.

When to use it

Use it when the pattern says the cast-on stitches will be uncovered, joined or worked later.

What to check

Check stitch count, waste-yarn contrast and the direction from which the provisional chain will be removed.

Common mistakes

Using felted waste yarn, losing the release direction, or letting live stitches escape during removal.
