technique
SSK
SSK is a left-leaning decrease made by slipping stitches and knitting them together.
What it is
SSK decreases one stitch while making the decrease line lean left. It is often used as the visual partner to K2tog.
How Ruke patterns use it
Ruke Knowledge uses SSK to explain decrease direction clearly, even when a pattern uses a Ruke-specific decrease abbreviation.
Pattern notation examples
- Use it together with K2tog when explaining mirrored shaping.
- It helps a knitter understand why decrease direction matters, not only stitch count.
When to use it
Use it where the pattern needs a left-leaning decrease.
What to check
Check slip direction, stitch mount and whether the decrease mirrors the opposite side.
Common mistakes
Slipping stitches incorrectly, twisting the final stitch unintentionally, or using SSK where K2tog is needed.
