technique
Knit stitch
The knit stitch is a foundation stitch that creates the smooth V-shaped side of knitted fabric.
What it is
The knit stitch is worked with the yarn at the back of the work. It is simple, but it carries much of the structure in stockinette, garter stitch, ribbing and shaping sections.
How Ruke patterns use it
Ruke patterns use the knit stitch as a base action. Once the movement is calm and consistent, the knitter can focus on markers, shaping, gauge and fit.
Pattern notation examples
- In the round, knitting every round creates stockinette fabric.
- Knit stitches also appear inside decreases, increases and rib patterns.
When to use it
Use it whenever the pattern says to knit, work stockinette in the round, or build a knit-based texture.
What to check
Check yarn position, stitch mount, edge stitches and whether the fabric is growing without accidental increases.
Common mistakes
Wrapping the yarn the wrong way, splitting the yarn, or pulling edge stitches tighter than the rest.
