Gauge Swatch
A gauge swatch is a sample used to measure stitch and row gauge before starting a project.
What it is
A gauge swatch should be large enough to measure away from the edges and should be washed or blocked the same way as the finished project.
How Ruke patterns use it
A gauge swatch is the practical test behind the Gauge number in Ruke patterns. Since Ruke gauge is often stated after washing, the swatch must be treated the same way as the finished garment fabric.
Examples
Use the swatch to compare stitch gauge, row gauge and washed behavior before choosing a size.
For textured patterns, such as Yoga Summer Sweater stitch pattern, swatch the actual stitch pattern rather than plain stockinette.
When to use it
Use it before starting a pattern to test yarn, needle size, tension and finished fabric behavior.
What to check
Check that the swatch is large enough, washed the same way as the project and measured away from the edges.
