Gauge Swatch
A gauge swatch is a sample used to measure stitch and row gauge before starting a project.
What it is
A swatch lets you test fabric before committing to a full garment. It should be large enough to measure away from the edges.
How Ruke patterns use it
Ruke patterns often depend on washed gauge and intended ease. A swatch helps the knitter begin with more confidence and fewer surprises.
Pattern notation examples
- Swatch in the stitch pattern named in the gauge section.
- Wash or block the swatch the way the finished garment will be treated.
When to use it
Use it before starting a pattern where fit, size or drape matters.
What to check
Check swatch size, stitch gauge, row gauge, washed behavior and whether the fabric feels right for the design.
Common mistakes
Making the swatch too small, measuring near the edge, or skipping washing when the pattern gauge is measured after washing.
