A yarn over places the working yarn over the needle to create a new open stitch.

How Ruke patterns use it
Ruke pattern lines use yarn overs where an intentional hole, eyelet or increase is part of the fabric. Unlike M1R or M1L, the opening is usually visible and should not be closed by twisting unless instructed.
Pattern notation examples
- Round 11 *YO, k2tog; repeat from * to end, sm. Note: k2tog is worked by joining the same two stitches (knit with knit stitches; purl with purl stitches).
- Round 13 *P1, k1; repeat from * to end, sm. Note: p1 must be worked above the yarn over.
When to use it
Use it when the pattern writes YO or describes bringing the yarn over the needle.
What to check
Check yarn direction, the following stitch and whether the yarn over is meant to count as an increase.
Common mistakes
Moving the yarn as for a normal knit-purl transition, dropping the yarn over, or closing the intended eyelet.
