How Ruke patterns use it
Ruke patterns pair left and right purl increases when shaping must remain mirrored on a purl-facing surface. The direction is part of the instruction, not only the stitch-count change.
Pattern notation examples
- Row 12 (RS) Sl1, k3, sm, M1L purl, purl to st marker, M1R purl, sm, k3, p last st. [Increased: 2 sts]
- Row 13 (WS) Sl1, p3, sm, M1R purl, purl to st marker, M1L purl, sm, p3, p last st. [Increased: 2 sts]
When to use it
Use it where the pattern explicitly asks for a left-leaning purl increase.
What to check
Check strand direction, purl entry and that the new stitch closes without an accidental yarn over.
Common mistakes
Confusing M1LP with M1L, reversing the lift, or tightening the strand until it is difficult to purl.
